EG-6 UPDATE: Gonk gets a face!

You can see the original opening for the faceplate, which didn’t work out for me. I did what most GONK builders do…and used a plastic tupperware item for the faceplate.

But I found it was too soft, and pliable and I didn’t like the way it looked after I painted it.

Here is the new faceplate I found at Walmart.

It was already black, so no painting, and more rigid plastic. It was bigger, so I had to do some trimming.

You can’s have a shop without a sharpie!

Two minutes later, GONK has a face!

I went over to the drill press and cut a 1″ hole for his LED blinking eye. I have about 20 of these left. They are perfect for GONK eyes. I made them from some stock indicator light covers. I have some glass and some plastic. I am using the glass because I think it looks better.

I am using a multi-color LED flasher that runs off 3 watch batteries. I will re-wire this later after I get my computer system in.

It was hard trying to take a picture and capture the light ‘ON’…I was trying to get the red.

Here I started putting some greeblies on.

YES…thats the coin slot from an R2 unit. I had an extra one, so GONK asked if he could have it. What’s a Jawa to do?

A few computer components, an R2 part, LED flasher…but it still looked like it was missing something. That’s one of the GREAT things about building an EG-6…EG-6 builder’s never fuss about what greeblies or components you put on. I’ve watch all the movies many times, and the one thing I noticed about all the EG-6 droids…none of them are the same!

Final Faceplate in, and operating!

Here is a little video of the flashing unit.
